February 4, 2014 Meeting NotesThe theme of the meeting was “Bees.” Lili was our Presiding Officer, we had 9 in attendance. Lili attended the officer training session held last week, and learned several things, including the fact that we need to fill important roles before the next meeting, and to send agenda to members in a timely manner.
Toastmaster was Ron Word of the Day – Dave – Contrite Speaking Tip – Lili – always have a note in your back pocket for what you’re going to talk about. The note should have the top three points of your speech to help keep you focused. Humor – Larry – told a series of bee jokes. Speeches: – Cindy’s speech, “Something to Talk About”, discussed the challenges in coming up with speech topics, and gave members some ideas about ways to come up with speech ideas. – Mary Jo’s presentation, “SB Beautiful” was designed to convince the SB Beautiful Board to take stronger action to clean up litter around our beautiful town. Her suggestions included encouraging people to take bags and pick up trash on their walks, and to get more of our highways “adopted” under the Adopt a Highway program. – Dave told an amusing and very creative story about his adventures “Trapping Pinnipeds” for a marine research study, and we learned what a “pinniped” was! Although he did get bitten, he did manage to avoid getting the dreaded “seal finger” disease! Tabletopics master was Sol General Evaluator was Wayne Evaluators were Larry, Wayne and Grace Ah-Counter – February 4 has been designated as the official No Ah Counting day, absolving members from the need to worry about the use of “filler” words. Timer was Larry Lili’s Rooney advocated for offices with windows that actually open to allow us to appreciate the beautiful sunshine and fresh air that surrounds us. Awardmaster – Sol – Lili won the Best Tabletopics award for her description of how to promote bees. – Grace won the Best Evaluator spot for her evaluation of Dave’s speech – Dave won the Best Speaker award for his very creative tale about stalking pinnipeds. Closing notes: Mary Jo and Ron encouraged everyone to sign up for the tall tales contest Feb. 25. Speeches are 3-5 minutes.
