May 27, 2014 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Summer Fun.” Mary Jo was our Presiding Officer; there were 13 people at the meeting, including returning guest Margaret and new guest Sasha.
Toastmaster: Mary Jo
Joke: Wayne – told an oldie but goodie about the need to be prepared to outrun your hiking partner when you’re in grizzly country.
Larry gave us the Word of the Day, canicular, which means “of or relating to the dog days of summer,” those hot sultry days in July and August that people in some parts of the country must suffer through. Larry also kept track of our verbal transgressions.
Dave’s speaking tip described the importance of good eye contact and appropriate hand gestures during a speech. Remember to focus on individuals to bring the listener in, and use hand gestures that are appropriate for the speech.
Wayne’s speech, “My experiences with National Parks,” gave us tips for exploring our national parks – especially to get out of the car, hike around and spend several days! He provided advice for things to bring, especially water, and shared some of the adventures he’s had in his travels.
Christine told us about “The Importance of Stretching.” But instead of talking about why stretching before exercise is important, she provided an inspirational speech to encourage us to “stretch” beyond our comfort zone. Stretching our activities prepares us to address unexpected challenges as they come along, improving the ability to communicate, lead and increase self-confidence.
Grace’s speech, “The Life Changing Speech” related ways she has seen public speaking change people’s lives. Grace described a challenge a fellow Toastmaster issued to her to take a risk and talk about something she hadn’t done before. Grace found that after giving this speech, she rediscovered her passion and talent for art.
