June 10, 2014 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Our Fathers.” Lili was our Presiding Officer; there were 13 people at the meeting.
Toastmaster: Larry, who did a great job leading the meeting – provided us with quotes from famous fathers throughout the meeting.
Jokemaster Sol related a personal story about a misunderstanding between his father and a local deli owner.
Dave’s Word of the Day was Potentate, which means “one having great power – autocratic.”
Lili’s speech, “I Wish I Would Have Packed a Lunch” lured us in with a tale of her recent journey from San Francisco to Santa Barbara, and challenges in finding a good lunch spot. But just when we thought Lili was going to tell us about finding an In ‘n Out oasis in the desolate Salinas Valley, she faked us out by shifting the focus of the speech to advice about packing a good, healthy lunch, complete with recipes!
Ron’s speech, “Dick Swan,” talked about his “replacement father,” a unique individual that shape Ron’s life. Ron shared a number of interesting stories about Dick, and the lessons he learned from the relationship. Underneath a moving story was the message that often the people that can make the biggest difference in your life can come from unexpected places.
Mary Jo gave her second speech from the Professional Speaker manual, part two of a two-part speech titled “Keynote Address – California Association of Personal Trainers.” Mary Jo described ways to motivate and inspire clients to maintain their exercise and healthy living programs.
Wayne led the Table Topics discussion for the evening.
Cindy was the General Evaluator for the evening, Dave, Azim and Christine were the speech evaluators.
Sol’s Rooney suggested that sometimes bigger isn’t better in relating a story about a local company with a big marketing effort that suffered an ignominious end.
Stephanie was the Awardmaster:
Ron received the award for Best Speaker for his speech, “Dick Swan.”
Best Evaluator went to Christine for her evaluation of Mary Jo’s speech.
Cindy won the Best Table Topics award for her description of her father.
Notes: Christine’s term as area governor is up in June, she noted that the role is available for anyone that is interested.
