June 24, 2014 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Family.” Lili was our Presiding Officer; there were 12 people at the meeting.
New business: This is last meeting for this Toastmaster year, the new year starts on July 1. New officers are: President – Mary Jo, Treasurer – Grace, VP Education – Wayne, VP PR – Christine, VP Membership – Ron, Sergeant at Arms – Larry, Secretary – Cindy. Mary Jo has also agreed to be the E3 Area Governor.
Toastmaster: Lili shared anecdotes and famous sayings about family.
Jokemaster: Mary Jo
Speaking Tip: Sol gave the advice that once you finish your speech, and are putting notes together, shorten notes by taking out extraneous words to include only key words as reminders for key points, use a smaller piece of paper, only write on one side, number your pages and memorize your opening and closing statements.
Wayne’s speech, “An Old Story from a Different Point of View – told us the story of David and Goliath, and provided some insight into battle practices of the time, and why David was successful in slaying Goliath. Wayne left us with the reminder that things aren’t always what they seem, and beware of shepherd boys with slings in their pockets.
Larry gave a practice run of an upcoming speech he is giving about EcoFaith, an interfaith initiative for collaboration of various religious organizations to work with their members to take steps to lower carbon emissions and promote sustainability. Larry is presenting EcoFaith to groups in Santa Barbara to encourage them to participate in EcoFaith.
Table Topicsmaster Christine took a unique approach to Table Topics this week by presenting members with a bag filled with pieces of paper that had book titles printed on them. Members were asked to “sell” the book to the club.
