July 8, 2014 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Relaxation.” Mary Jo was our Presiding Officer; there were 15  people at the meeting including guest Melisa and newest member Hanna!
Toastmaster: Christine
Joke: Sol – Amused us with a number of funny plays on words
Speaking Tip: Wayne’s tip, “say it out loud,” advised that once we’ve developed a final draft of a speech, go through the entire speech six times out loud. While we are often legends in our own minds when mentally rehearsing a speech, saying the speech out loud gives us the opportunity to identify tricky spots and wording that may be awkward when spoken.
Word of the Day: Hanna gave us the challenging word, quiescent, which means: in a state or period of inactivity or dormancy
Ah Counter:  Liz
Timer:  Mary Jo
  • Dave‘s speech, “Addressing Climate Change: The Intersection of Academia, Government & Industry” was one that he’d given recently at a conference. Dave talked about  initiatives the State of CA is considering to manage emissions to try to control climate change.
  • James’ speech was from the Specialty Speeches manual – Read Out Loud. James did a terrific reading of the Dr. Seuss story, “The Lorax,” to the audience, complete with pictures!
  • In her speech, “What You Learn When You Say Yes,” Grace reminded us of what we miss when we let fear get in the way of accepting a challenging opportunity. Moving outside of your comfort zone can often bring satisfying results, and she asked audience members to provide some real examples of what happened when they said “yes” to a challenge.
Table Topics: Cindy
