There were 18 people at the meeting including guests Devin, Himani, and Jack, and our newest member, Melisa! Notes: Officers are reminded that Officer training is being held Saturday from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Citrix GoToCafe at 7414 Hollister Avenue. Toastmaster: Larry Jokemaster: Hanna’s joke made us aware of the trouble with suing the Devil. Speaking Tip: Ron suggested that speakers arrive early to the speaking venue to familiarize themselves with the stage and the room. When mounting the stage and preparing to speak, remember to wait until the moderator (or whoever is introducing you) is seated, and then wait for a “painful” amount of time to make sure you have the audience’s attention before starting your speech. Word of the Day: Dave had us chuckling with his word of the day, which was “chortle,” which means to laugh because you are amused or pleased. Speakers: Cindy’s speech, “Its as Easy as P.I.E.” prepared everyone for the upcoming Evaluation contest by explaining the purpose behind the evaluation and guidelines for a good evaluation, including PIE (Praise, Inform, Encourage). Our perpetually positive President, Mary Jo, hinted at her own personal “Hangover” adventure in her speech, “What Happened in Vegas, or Making Things Fun.” In addition to relating stories about her trip to Vegas in July, where she found out that it’s still 110 degrees at midnight, Mary Jo reminded us that we should ALWAYS remember to inject fun into every day. Ron gave an Ice Breaker speech, telling us about the first 20 or so years of his life which were spent in cold, rainy locations where people had some strange habits. At some point Ron realized that there are plenty of places with pleasant weather and he found his way to California, and Santa Barbara. Lili’s Rooney related her frustration with an extremely long wait to see her doctor, something that we’ve all experienced. But sometimes seeing a doctor we like is worth the wait. Awardmaster: Yolanda Guest Jack received the Best Tabletopics award for his explanation of whether he’d rather listen to rapper LL Cool J or Mozart. Guille took the Best Evaluator award for her evaluation of Cindy’s speech about evaluating. The Best Speaker award went to Mary Jo for her speech reminding us to do something fun every day!
