October 7, 2014 Meeting NotesThe theme of the meeting was “Toys.” Mary Jo was the Presiding Officer. There were 14 people at the meeting, including guest Caitlin and our newest member, Brian!
Joke: Sol told a series of “play on word” jokes.
Speaking Tip: Larry reminded us that perception is everything. Go in to a speech (or anything you do!) with a positive attitude. If you go in to a speech thinking your going to knock their socks off, you will!
Word of the Day: We had two – Wooden and Frivolous!
Liz’s speech, “How to Be Your Own Best Parent,” illustrated how our subconscious thoughts can influence our behavior and ultimately our lives. Liz has done extensive research in this area; she used Wayne as a prop to demonstrate how important positive thinking is to our self-image and our success.
The club received an excellent education on how to get what we want from our cable and mobile providers in Ron‘s speech, “How to Deal with Call Centers.” Ron gave the club a series of recommendations for dealing with call center agents to get the very best deal!
Mary Jo continued her sales efforts with her speech, “Conquering the Cold Call,” where she demonstrated cold call practices via a role play with Larry, and then solicited comments from the audience.
Awardmaster was Stephanie. Awards went to:
Alyce for Best Table Topics describing how have toys changed since she was a child.
Himani for Best Evaluator for her excellent evaluation of Liz’s speech.
Liz for Best Speaker for her inspirational speech about the impact of negative self-talk and our subconscious messaging on our lives, encouraging club members to keep a positive attitude.
Sol‘s Rooney lamented the fact that he has a very hard time deciphering vanity plates, to the point where he took a wrong exit.
Just a reminder that the Area Speech contest is being held on Saturday, October 11 at St. Mark’s (4901 Nojoqui Avenue, Los Olivos).
