November 18, 2014 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Food.”  Stephanie did an outstanding job during her first time in the Toastmaster role.  Mary Jo was the Presiding Officer. There were 11 people at the meeting.
Yolanda’s speaking tip was a great idea for responding to questions when you don’t know the answer. Instead of stammering around or trying to make something up, just say: “I don’t know the answer, but reminds me of (pick something relevant),” and then talk about what you DO know. Sometimes people are just trying to get a sense for how articulate you are.
Wayne’s speech, “Have a Conversation” provided the club with speaking tips, starting with guidance to “have a conversation.” Practice the speech much that when you deliver the speech it’s like talking to a friend. Wayne provided the club with many helpful hints and examples from TED talk speakers.
Appreciation vs Happiness” was the title of Azim’s speech. Several visits to see his brother in Canada made Azim appreciate Santa Barbara even more!
Grace took a unique approach to her speech,Ask Me a Question.” Grace’s speech was an impromptu discussion where asked members to write a question on a card. Her responses to those questions gave us insight into Grace and her perspective on life along with a view of her hidden (until now) acting talents!
Word of the Day: Cindy gave us frowsy, which means musty or unkempt.
Awardmaster: Cindy
The award for Best Speaker went to Azim for his speech about appreciating what we have and where we are.
Cindy received Best Evaluator award for her evaluation of Grace’s speech.
Best Table Topics award went to Yolanda.
In her Rooney, Stephanie described her “traffic conspiracy theory,” where everyone plans to get on 101 south at the same time she does to drive to LA on Thanksgiving, making what should be a 2 hour trip much longer and more painful.
