January 6, 2015 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Wild Kingdom.”  Mary Jo was the Presiding Officer. There were 12 people at the meeting including guests Fred, Kristina and Danny.
Toastmaster was Ron
Speaking Tip: Larry reminded us about the “rule of three.” When giving a speech, give 3 examples, organize the structure into three sections, etc.
Mary Jo kicked off the evening with a provocatively titled speech, “The Problem with Clothes.” We thought she was going to overshare some juicy details about her weekend activities, but instead she related a series of amusing stories about clothing issues: a sock-eating washing machine, a man’s attempt to wash his own clothes while traveling, and a public speaker with mismatched shoes and an embarrassing zipper incident. In the end, Mary Jo did advocate for fig leaves instead of clothes, so we’re all a bit worried about what she might wear to next week’s meeting!!Alyce also gave a provocative speech, asking the question “What makes SB Paradise?” Several weeks ago, The Independent newspaper published an opinion letter Alyce had written in response to an article in a November issue of the paper that discussed the lengths that people go to in order to stay in Santa Barbara. There are many beautiful places in this world where people can live comfortably without enduring such a struggle to manage the high cost of living, and Alyce challenged us to ask why so many people think Santa Barbara is “paradise.”

Cindy gave a speech from the Interpretive Reading manual, acting out a scene from the play, “Midnight of the Soul.”

Awardmaster was Grace

The award for Best Table Topics went to Kristina for her animated explanation about why she is a “cat person” rather than a “dog person.”

Wayne took the award for Best Evaluator for his evaluation of Cindy’s speech.

The Best Speaker award went to Cindy for her monodrama about a woman down on her luck.

Wayne’s Rooney talked about the intrusion of technology, particularly email, on our time. Things that begin as ways to save time often end up sucking more of our time in the end.
