Rooney: Sol—– February 3, 2015 Meeting Notes Toastmaster: Larry Speaking Tip: Sol reminded us that speech titles are important. We should try to make them interesting by using adjectives or other devices to get listeners’ attention. Word of the Day: Christine gave us “mellifluous,” which means a smooth, flowing sound. Speakers: Wayne’s speech, “Is Santa Barbara Paradise?” was something of a rebuttal to a speech Alyce gave a few weeks ago. Wayne has lived in SB since the mid-eighties, and initially didn’t think it was paradise because of traffic, cost of living, etc. After spending one January day on the water with a friend from the East Coast, the friend reminded Wayne that there is a price to living in such a beautiful place. Mary Jo’s speech was a project from the Interpretive Reading manual. She performed a wonderful rendition of the meeting between Dorothy and The Scarecrow from the “Wizard of Oz.” In her speech, “Keep the Blue Ocean,” Lili related a series of stories about our impact on the oceans, both the destructive things that the human race does as well as our efforts to preserve the ocean and its ecosystem. She closed with the story of her grandson who, after finding what she believed to be an egg from a California Horn Shark on the beach, wanted to crack it open to see what was inside. After some discussion about the egg, he decided to put it back in the water “with its Mommy and Daddy.” Awardmaster: Alyce The award for Best Speaker went to Lili, for her speech about preserving our oceans. Grace won the Best Evaluator award for her evaluation of speech. The Best Table Topics award went to Alyce, for her explanation of the importance of music in her life. Alyce noted that she was born with a “song in her heart.” Upcoming Events: March 3 – Tall Tales Contest during Mission Chapter Meeting March 10 – International Contest during Mission Chapter meeting Saturday, March 21 – Area Contest – details will be sent closer to the event.
