November 30th, 2016 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was Bah Humbug!.
Cindy was the presiding officer. There were 9 people at the meeting.
• Azim’s speech, “Mandatory Military Service,” described his experience serving a two-year mandatory military service in Iran after he graduated from high school (or the Iranian equivalent of U.S. high school). Azim faced significant adjustments in the beginning of his service, from the weather (moving from his home in the south to the mountainous north), to rising at 4 a.m., having no hot water, and finally being assigned to teach children in a very small village. In the end, the duty proved to be a rewarding experience for Azim – the people in the village where he taught became family and he stays in touch with them even today.
• In his speech, “Evaluating Christmas,” Ron evaluated Christmas traditions and practices. What is good – gifts, lights on houses, encouraging kids to write letters; What is not so good – season is too long and involves excessive lying about Santa and hideous gifts that you receive. Ron’s improvements included moving Christmas to June and eliminating Christmas music loops in stores.
