October 10, 2017 Meeting Notes

The theme of the meeting was “Unintended Consequences,” and Jon, our Vice-President of Education, was the presiding officer. There were 15 people at the meeting including returning guests Morgan.

Toastmaster: Grace

Speakers:

Robert’s speech, “Negotiating in Public,” was about President Trump’s third travel ban, the end of the litigation about the second travel ban, and the start of the litigation about the third ban, and how the process appears to be President Trump negotiating in public, and how Congress is missing from that negotiation.

Christine spoke of how our libraries in the United States are “national treasures,” and how libraries benefit us by providing us with access to books, providing programs for the community, and by providing spaces to meet, and how libraries are under-appreciated in the United States.  She contrasted the availability of libraries here with the complete lack of libraries in her native India.

Ron, by audience request, provided us with the story of how he came to the United States after the divorce of his improbably-married parents, and after living essentially on his own as a ten-year-old in Montreal — and how he arrived in the United States on a bus that stank (because it ran over a skunk).

Best Speaker went to Robert

Best Evaluator went to Holly for her evaluation of Ron’s speech.

Best Table Topics was Norma for sharing information about her exercise acting as a tire on a car in acting class.

October 3, 2017 Meeting Notes

The theme of the meeting was “Harvest,” and Jen was the presiding officer. There were 15 people at the meeting including returning guests Morgan and Stephen, and long-lost Mission Chapter member Holly, who evidently was abducted by aliens a year or so ago and is finally back on Earth to rejoin Mission – welcome back Holly!

Toastmaster: Kristina

Speakers:

Cindy’s speech, “Creating the Best Club Climate,” focused on what club members can to do maintain a positive, fun club atmosphere that will help attract new members.

In his timely speech, “Gun Ownership and Violence,” Larry educated the club with statistics about guns and the ratios between percentage of gun owners and deaths, including suicides, in various countries. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of guns are in the U.S., which is where the highest percentage of people have died from gun-related injuries.

Taiwo’s speech, “My Love Affair with Rugby,” was a follow up to his Ice Breaker from a couple of weeks ago. Taiwo talked about how he became involved in rugby and the comraderie of being a part of a team.

Best Speaker went to Cindy

Best Evaluator went to Jon for his evaluation of Cindy’s speech.

Best Table Topics was Morgan for sharing information about her Pumpkin Patch recording on YouTube that is guaranteed to help your dog relax!
