Mission Chapter’s 35th Anniversary will be celebrated on April 29th – we’ll invite some of our old members and have a special evening.
April 15, 2014 Meeting Notes
The theme of the meeting was “Earth Day.” Lili was our Presiding Officer; there were 12 people at the meeting, including guests Victoria (Guille’s daughter) and Mary Jo’s friend, Todd.
Toastmaster was Mary Jo
Word-of-the-day: Dave gave us “Walter Mitty,” which means “a commonplace, unadventurous person that seeks escape from reality through daydreaming.”
Humor: Todd gave us a humorous play on words.
Ah-counter Dave kept track of our verbal missteps.
Wayne suggested that when speaking at a social event, it is probably best to avoid coffee and alcohol. Coffee can amplify nervousness since you’re probably already nervous about speaking, and of course alcohol can cause you to speak unclearly or worse, speak or behave inappropriately.
Timer: Wayne
Ron’s speech, “Earth Day Transportation” reminded us of the benefits of bicycling rather than driving. Often it can take the same amount of time to bike as it does to drive, or maybe less depending on traffic. Riding a bike also allows you to see our beautiful environment, get some cardio exercise in, and have fun! Don’t just jump on a bike, some preparation is a good idea. Ron gave us a dozen tips for safety and bicycle maintenance that we should think about before pedaling (also listed in a handout), along with some history of the evolution of the bicycle.
Lili’s speech, “One Cockroach is Too Many,” recounted a horrible misadventure in Mexico that sounded like a scene out of a horror movie rather than a vacation! Despite the unwanted guests that came out while she was sleeping, Lili would return to Mexico to see the amazing temples and sights – she just may stay in a different place next time!
Christine’s speech, Hidden in Plain Sight,” described the removal of the rose colored glasses that can often accompany a home purchase. Her new house has all kinds of beautiful attributes. However, several weeks later, she is finding lots of “new” things that were actually there all the time, including fish and a worm composting bin. Christine is now shopping for overalls and garden gloves in a quest to find out if she has a green thumb!
Tabletopics Master: Guille
General Evaluator: Cindy
Evaluators: Cindy, Larry, Grace
Awardmaster: Mary Jo & Victoria
Best Table Topics Award went to Victoria, a future Toastmaster – congratulations Victoria!
Grace received Best Evaluator award for her evaluation of Christine’s speech.
Lili received the Best Speaker award for her cockroach horror story.
Dave’s Rooney exposed the ludicrous serving sizes on nutrition labels for snack foods that he came across when counting calories for his diet – who really eats just 12 potato chips or ten almonds?
